Artist statement:

My art is confined to the written and spoken word but each book has taken form in rooms hung with paintings I fell in love with. The collection has encompassed everything from Group of Seven, Weston, and Chris Woods to originals from Indonesia and Central America. As my little books earn their way through the world (often with a local painting as the cover), I will resume collecting paintings that offer me insight into the nature of existence.

I would like to join any efforts into Powell River's development of a comprehensive permanent collection and a publicly supported gallery, perferably as part of a larger fine-arts school.

Meanwhile, as editor and owner of The Pack Press, whose chief business is publishing services for authors and small publishers, I encourage the connexion between writer and visual artist in book design. Please see www.thepackpress.com for news on current publications.

Notes on the Images: The Pack Press understands fine art on a book cover can open the reader's door quickly to poetry, memoir or fiction. For glasstown, the poet herself designed the cover. Soon to be released, my mother's memoir, Ponderings, will feature on the back cover the puss-cat painted by her husband, Gerry Laffra, a wildlife painter, for her children's book, The Cat of Nine Tales. A book of poetry (still!) in production, Parallel: forty-nine Canadian poets speak to Obama, will feature a wonderful painting by Meghan Hildebrand on its cover.

The painting on the cover of Bitters is by Autumn Skye Morrison. Another of her early works graces the cover of my novel La Chiripa, soon to be released by Stars Above Stars Below Publishing. Kudos to Mischa Brooks-Thoma for the cover of Power of Water with her fabulous photography.
